Abstract

Samples have been analysed for palynology from over 30 well sections from the Lake Albert Graben in Uganda (Blocks 1, 2 and 3). The sediments have been dated as Late Miocene to Holocene in age.

The palynological assemblages have been analysed quantitatively. A wide variety of pollen, spores, algae and fungi have been identified, and a visual estimate has been made of the kerogen.

The pollen and spores have enabled the recognition of parent plants derived from the immediate and surrounding areas. These include lake, lakeside swamps and marshes, lowland forest swamp, savannah and bushland, tropical forest, and cooler climate conifers.

Using a combination of age-diagnostic pollen, regional vegetation changes, climatic effects of the northern hemisphere ice ages and the doming in East Africa, a robust age breakdown for these sequences is proposed.
