Abstract

Over the past five years South Asian numismatic research at the British Museum has focused on die studies of the Kushan Empire. To facilitate the project the curators involved developed an online database suitable for recording of die identities and performing analysis of the data involved. The use of die studies has been constrained by methodological and practical issues. The experience of this project has shown that existing technologies resolve many practical issues associated with die studies. Automated recording, online collaboration, dynamic linking and statistics, as well as interactive charts and image compositing make new approaches to die studies possible. This paper will focus on the lessons learned from the project and the potential that online computing has for future work.
