Abstract

English Heritage and the National Heritage Protection Commissions Team (NHPCT) submitted a request for the provision of a detailed 3D metric survey of the Stonehenge circle and its immediate surroundings known as” the triangle”. Our project team was fortunate in being awarded the contact for providing such data and this paper outlines the subsequent methodologies used to capture high resolution 3D imagery and spatial data for the purpose of providing high quality colourised meshed models to all features of the site, with data being represented at various levels of resolution and decimation. To for fill the requirements of the brief for this project, terrestrial laser scanning in both long and short range form was successfully integrated with current digital photogrammetric techniques to provide a harmonious combination of  3 dimensional survey data suitable for providing high quality, colourised meshed models.

All laser scanning and engineering activities were undertaken by the Greenhatch Group Ltd using the very latest scanning technology and total stations available and all photographic and photogrammetric elements of the project were undertaken by Akins Geospatial using an inspirational high level boom, digital photographic data capture technique to provide the high level 3d information required.
